Flash Flood in Nepal’s Gorkha District Damages Homes, Bridges, and Infrastructure

A sudden flash flood along the Budhi Gandaki River has caused widespread damage in Gorkha District, Nepal, after a possible landslide-related river blockage led to a surge of water, mud, and debris downstream. Several houses, suspension bridges, and other infrastructure have reportedly been destroyed or damaged, prompting emergency warnings for communities living along the river.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning in the Chumnubri and Dharche rural municipalities. Authorities are assessing the damage, coordinating emergency response activities, and warning residents in downstream areas to remain alert as river conditions continue to be monitored.

What Happened Along the Budhi Gandaki River?

Preliminary information from Nepal’s hydrological authorities indicates that a landslide near Chumchet may have blocked a tributary of the Budhi Gandaki River before water suddenly surged downstream. The exact cause of the flooding has not yet been conclusively established.

Residents reportedly heard loud roaring sounds during the early morning hours before the floodwaters reached nearby settlements. The sudden rise in water levels left little time for some people to protect their belongings or move property away from the river.

The incident has highlighted the danger posed by temporary river blockages in mountainous terrain, where the sudden release of accumulated water can create destructive flash floods.

Areas Affected by the Flood

Reports from local authorities and news organizations indicate that multiple settlements along the Budhi Gandaki River corridor have experienced damage.

  • Jagat and nearby settlements: Houses and riverside structures have reportedly been swept away.
  • Salleri and Paiyu/Bagar areas: Reports indicate substantial damage to homes and local infrastructure.
  • Machhakhola and Kerauja: Floodwaters have affected settlements and destroyed a suspension bridge connecting the areas.
  • Nyakchet and Sirdibas: A suspension bridge linking the communities has reportedly been swept away.
  • Soti and Arughat: Bridges important for local connectivity, including a motorable bridge connecting Gorkha and Dhading, have reportedly suffered severe damage.

The Kathmandu Post reported estimates of 35–40 houses swept away in some affected settlements, while other early reports gave lower figures. The overall damage remains subject to official assessment.

Emergency Response and Helicopter Assistance

Emergency response teams have been working to assist people in vulnerable locations. Published reports indicate that the Nepali Army rescued six people from Jagat by helicopter, while workers at an affected hydropower project construction site also escaped to safety.

Helicopters can be particularly valuable in Nepal’s remote mountain regions when damaged bridges and difficult terrain limit access by road or trail. Depending on the mission and conditions, aviation support can assist with aerial assessments, transportation of rescue personnel, delivery of essential supplies, and evacuation where authorized.

However, operations in mountainous areas require careful consideration of weather, visibility, terrain, landing conditions, aircraft performance, and coordination with the relevant authorities. Emergency flights must be conducted in accordance with applicable aviation requirements and safety procedures.

Flood Warnings Issued for Downstream Communities

Nepal’s disaster management and hydrological authorities have warned people living along the Budhi Gandaki River and downstream waterways to remain vigilant.

The potential risk extends beyond the initial flood-affected settlements because the Budhi Gandaki joins the Trishuli River system. Alerts have covered vulnerable downstream areas in districts including Gorkha, Dhading, Tanahun, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi.

Residents and visitors have been advised to move to higher ground when instructed, stay away from riverbanks, and avoid crossing flooded waterways or damaged bridges. River levels and the extent of the danger may change rapidly, making official updates especially important.

Important Information for Travellers in Nepal

Travellers, trekking groups, guides, and tour operators planning journeys through affected areas should check local access conditions before proceeding.

Road and bridge damage can disrupt transport arrangements and delay access to remote destinations. Helicopter travel is also subject to weather, visibility, operational feasibility, and the required permissions and clearances.

Passengers should confirm their travel arrangements with their operator and follow instructions from local authorities. No journey should proceed when conditions are considered unsafe.

Air Dynasty Heli Services: Following Developments

Air Dynasty Heli Services recognizes the importance of safe and reliable aviation access across Nepal’s challenging Himalayan geography. During natural disasters, helicopter operations may provide an important means of reaching remote locations when conventional routes are disrupted, subject to the requirements of each mission and the instructions of the responsible authorities.

Our thoughts are with the communities affected by the Budhi Gandaki River flood. We hope that residents, visitors, and emergency personnel remain safe as response efforts continue.

Further updates will follow as verified information becomes available.
