Overview
Mt Makalu(8,463m), the fifth tallest peak globally, is a peak located in the Mahalangur Himalayas Range of Nepal. The peak lies in the same mountain range as Mt. Everest, Cho Oyu, and Lhotse, the three of the eight-thousanders. Standing still about 19 KM southeast of Everest, Makalu’s pyramid-like structure can take your breath away. It is also one of the rugged mountains to climb in the world.
The trail to Mt Makalu is not as frequented or crowded as Everest’s. That is why it is one of the best off-the-beaten courses in Nepal. People generally do visit this place to do either Makalu Expedition or Makalu Base Camp Trek. The journey to the base camp of the fifth tallest peak starts as usual. But as you proceed further and further, the good things will start coming at you with such a speed that you will get impressed by all. You will trek through Makalu-Barun Valley’s breathtaking landscapes, rivers, and vegetation to reach the base camp.
As you reach Makalu Base Camp(5,250m), you eventually gain spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Yo, and Kanchenjunga too. Mt Everest’s face seen from the Makalu Base Camp is the Kangshung Face, which many do not see. Indeed, exploring the Makalu area is the best thing to do in a while. The beauty and rawness of the trail will make the journey worth remembering for a long time.
It is never easy to visit the Makalu and Makalu Base Camp areas. The expedition involves a strenuous walk of more than 15 days. Needless to address, you’ll gain good heights on the trip to this area.
